Why can't my child sound out a word? And what is the speech banana?
From DyslexiaMyLife.orgThe Speech Banana is a term used to describe where the phonemes, or sounds of human speech, appear on a hearing test. When the phonemes are plotted out on the chart, they look like the shape of a banana. Therefore, audiologists and other speech professionals refer to that area as the speech banana.
If a child has hearing problems, the child might not hear the letter. It is possible to have a hearing loss in only one ear (unilateral hearing loss)'” or in ... A child may “hear” some sounds, but not hear all the sounds they need. So asking a child to "sound it out" might not work.... They can't hear that letter or the differences between the two letters.
