Hello Mr. Sagmiller:
I was so glad to find your website
today. I’ll try to encapsulate a long story about my grandson as best I can.
Nearing the end of last school year, my “Sweet” 6-year-old grandson’s teacher
began to coax my daughter into agreeing to hold Sam back in 1st
grade. She said that although he excelled in other subjects, he was lagging
behind greatly in reading. We sought help to try to find out “What” was
holding Sam back. We could see that he had the “want to” and was really
struggling. His 1st-grade teacher didn’t have a clue what was
wrong. After extensive testing, Sam has been officially diagnosed with
Dyslexia. The professionals who offered their expertise suggested that Sam will
have to have Special Classes for reading and writing. I plan to order
your book; however, do you have any personal advice that might help us? I
looked up famous people with dyslexia/learning disabilities, and I found your
quote: “Dyslexia is not a disease to have and to be cured of, but a way of
thinking and learning. Often, it’s a gifted mind waiting to be found and
taught.” I love that quote, for it offers so much hope. I typed it up and
put it on a card to give to my daughter. Today was when she met with the professionals testing Sam, and it was today that she received his diagnosis of Dyslexia. If “sweetness, thoughtfulness, compassion” were gifts from the mind,
then I would say those are Sam’s gifts. Everyone talks about these traits in
him. But these are gifts from the heart. I want Sam to find his Mind’s Gift.
I’m trying to help him find it. I have Multiple Sclerosis and have issues with
my eyes and fatigue, but I love to write. I write in a variety of genres, and I wrote a Garden book for kids. Sam and his brother and I planted a container
garden one year. I co-authored the book with Sam’s brother. Sam is always
wanting us to write a book, so, we have one planned, which is about a Bassett
Hound pup that was a member of their family until he was hit by a car. He
was one special dog, and Sam is excited about he and I writing that book
together. I have a friend who also writes. She said as a child, she had great
difficulty with Math. Her father helped her learn math by putting it to music,
for he knew how much she loved music. I hope we can find a similar method to
help Sam. Thank you for any help you might offer us. We want to give Sam every
chance possible to overcome this stumbling block on his way to a happy, successful adult life. Thank you so much for listening.
Ms. Johnson
